I think the biggest obstacle currently is lack of consumer 
awareness and interest.  The fact that the term "3D" has been 
hijacked by the computer graphics world doesn't help, although 
perhaps we'll see cameras designed to create web ready "3D" 
models that can be adapted for use as true stereo imaging 
devices.

The mind reels at the thought of what could be possible with a 
dedicated digital stereo camera;  while previewing in stereo you 
could decide how far apart to place the lenses, perhaps there 
could be "auto-depth" settings as well as auto exposure.  Add a 
few more lenses and you could print lenticulars on the spot.  
Now all we need is a major manufacturer to sink some money
