I have been using a product called Filmrenew to clean old slides and negatives with very good results. One surprise that I have had with the product is that even some small scratches on slides became imperceptible when viewed. Check out http://members.tripod.com/~Moviecraft/supplies.html for information. The distributor is VERY knowledgeable about film preservation if you have any questions.
