You might want to refer to the recent article in the April 2001 issue of
Peterson's PHOTOgraphic magazine concerning restoring old slides.

The article's tips on storing and handling slides has the usual caveats such
as do not touch the film. However, one interesting observation concerns the
color shifting in older slides as the color dye layers fade. As most of us
are aware, Kodachrome film proves to be remarkably resistant to color
shifting because it uses a more stable dye process and stabilizing coating
in the development process. The article points out that "... most types of
liquid cleaners used on Kodachrome slides to remove fingerprints can
possibly remove this stabilization coating. If this occurs the images will
start to fade quickly. We also found that cleaned Kodachrome slides will
take a severe blue shift when duplicated."
