This is another plug for the ISU. Stereoscopy has had an article on
adjusting the electronic synch with a simple bit of circuitry and another on
a solenoid-sych for mechanical releases. My copies are still buried in
boxes, but the electronic synch allowed a rather accurate setup.

Are these KR or XR-10Ms? I've been using twinned XR-10Ms for almost two
years and in my experience as long as both cameras have their metering
active the synchronization is perfect. I've frozen droplets in waterfalls,
walking people, moving traffic and lots of birds. (My current APEC card of a
busy street was done on the XR-10Ms) If the cameras are in "power-saving"
mode the synch between them is off by about 1/4 second. This is remedied by
lightly touching each shutter release to "awaken" the cameras just before
shooting. Synchronization problems can also stem from faulty electronic
release jacks on the cameras - the Ricoh's 3/32" remote jacks aren't very
durable and it doesn't take much stress to weaken the connection. I'm
working on replacing these jacks with something sturdier on my pair. Jim

The next ISU Congress will be in Sydney Australia in September 2001.

Sydney is looking great in the lead up to the Olympic games this September
and for stereo workers this will really be the place to be in September of
next year. Start planning now to be in Sydney Australia in September 2001
for the 13th biennial ISU Congress.

The congress dates are 19th to 24th September 2001.

A 'General Information Sheet' and an 'Expression of Interest Form' can be
downloaded from the Photo-3D eGroups 'Files' section at
http://www.egroups.com/files/photo-3d/

The downloadable files are in portable document format (pdf).

In the ongoing twin camera topic, the Olympus XA family has been mentioned a
couple o'times.

I hardly think that a camera that has not been made for over ten years
qualifies as "current".

David Williams post an excellent answer to Bill Walsh's enquiry. I, too,
feel that most consumer grade print films do not produce flattering skin
tones, but if you really want Velvia-like colour in a print film try some
Agfa Ultra. Ultra is an ISO 50 print film in the Agfa "Triad" family and
just about takes the cake for contrast and saturation.

Another consideration is in the printing, regardless of which film stock has
been used. Both Kodak & Fuji offer high contrast colour print papers
(Kodak's Ultra & Fuji's Type C). Better labs may offer you the choice.

I understand that the KR-10M was sold in some markets (USA?) as an XR-10M
and that they are the same camera. Twinning these Ricoh cameras was
discussed on this list in mid February.

I use a pair of KR-10Ms that have been modified slightly to improve the sync
and to overcome the 'wake up' issue. The shutter button has three
connections, common, wake up and fire. If you remove the camera top and
solder wires to these three connections on each camera and then join the
wires together - lightly pressing the shutter button on one camera awakens
both cameras. If you also join the camera 'earths' either via another wire
or by filing the cameras to a metal bar via the tripod threaded socket, then
the batteries will also be paralleled.

This effective 4 wire arrangement improves the sync and overcomes the wakeup
issue.

I have uploaded four JPEG files, that show the external connections on my
KR-10Ms, to the Photo-3D 'Files' section at
http://www.egroups.com/files/photo-3d/

The Ricoh KR-10Ms were the base camera that RBT used for there model X2
stereo camera. When accurate sync is not an issue I wire my RBT-X2 to one
KR-10M in the manner described by Jim Harp for the occasional hyper shot
when I do not wish to carry the extra KR-10M as well as the RBT. I then
awaken both cameras just before the shot by either lightly pressing the
shutter buttons or switching the cameras off and then on again.

Subject: wagon view?

On my other main list (Oregon Trail) I have someone who is looking
for antique stereoviews of horse/oxen drawn wagons which could have
been used on the trail (for a museum exhibit). I've never seen anything
like this in a view, but maybe someone here can give me a clue as
to whether a resonably obtainable view like this exists.

If you have or know of one to look for, kindly drop a note. As far
as a date goes, the eariler the better, but a cut off of perhaps
1910 would probably be the limit.

Subject: twinnable Pentax and Ricoh SLRs

Hello:

I want to add commentary based on my recent experiments with the new Pentax
ZX-M and Ricoh XR-10M camera bodies.

My brand new Pentax ZX-M bodies have superb sync with only an occasional
glitch. I am going to keep them for natural light photography. Shooting
handheld during a recent fast paced session (model was getting
body-painted), I left the cameras on auto exposure (it picks aperture) and
got good matched exposures on all pairs. The viewfinder has a bright
legible readout, which I like. It is easy to "exposure lock" both cameras
for special compensation needs.

The very good sync between the cameras, however, is what hurts flash
performance - believe it or not. I could not get my strobe kit to work
with my special "stereo" PC-sync cord wired across the cameras in series.
(This works on my Pentax K1000. Only once both shutters have fully opened
is the flash trigger circuit closed. It's a good failsafe for the K1000,
too. If the bodies go too far out of sync, the flash stops firing).

I was able finally to make one of the ZX-M cameras fire the flash kit
reliably. But with only one camera doing the flash trigger, you have a
problem. What if the non-flashing camera opens up a fraction of a second
late? All it takes is a delay of 1/200sec, and you've lost half the frame
of the non flashing camera. (Synch speed is 1/100 for the ZX-M). And this
is precisely the problem with using flash on the Pentax - you get about a
50/50 chance when you shoot with flash.

The Ricohs sync well with flash for me because one of the cameras is about
1/100 sec. slow to open its shutter. So I put the flash cord on that one,
and I have good flash sync. every time for speeds up to 1/30. I examinded
three bodies to find a slow one, and mated it to the next prettier one.
The slight delay is not noticed in natural light photography, unless rapid
motion is occuring.

One thing I really hate about the Ricohs (actually: two things). The damn
things go to sleep constantly. When I'm shooting candids I like to keep
the camera up on my face all the time - I mean non stop for minutes at a
time. It's the only good way to get candid shots. With these cameras
going to sleep all the time (you have to wake them by depressing the
shutter release a bit), that's a real problem. And you cannot keep them
awake by periodically pushing the button. Oh no, the internal timer counts
down its thirty-odd seconds no matter what, then shuts the body down!

The problem might not be so bad except for the really dreadfully bad
internal display (that's the second thing), which might tell you the body
went to sleep, if only you could read it. Which most of the time you
can't. So I put the cameras to my face, but if I haven't got a shot after
twenty seconds or so, I pretty much have to give up, look at the top of the
bodies to see them go to sleep, then wake them up again. Aaargh! (Anyone
know how to fix that?)

If there only was a way to put a switchable delay on the Pentax ZX-M, that
rig would be perfect for both flash and natural light. Ah, well.

And then there's my need for bracketting with aperture... but no need to
get me started on that!

Boris
