Subject: Public exhibit and symposium.
"STEREOSCOPES Victorian 3D Entertainments & Modern Counterparts" is a
public exhibit of materials that illustrate the emergence and
development of stereo viewing. It also is a symposium for stereo
viewing, which will include a brief look at projected stereo images
and a longer look at antique view cards. The exhibit is open during
April and May 2001.
An announcement by the sponsor gives the details:
"Ted Sly, Orange County Historian, is proud to offer a fascinating
and entertaining program on stereo viewing on Saturday, April 28 at
the Historic 1841 Court House in Goshen (New York) at 10 :00 a.m.
(coffee at 9:00.) The presentation and execution will be under the
direction of Stuart Stiles of Middletown. Everyone attending will
have a viewer and several card reproductions to use during the
symposium.
(The bio of the speaker is given)
As a supplement to the Saturday program, an exhibit of stereoscopic
materials will be shown at the Court House on Mondays through
Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
. Please join us for these interesting and free-of-charge activities."
Comments on the exhibit and participation in the symposium by stereo
enthusiasts will be appreciated. If you are in the Goshen, New York
area, as Ted states, these events are free-of charge. I'll leave it
up to you to determine how "interesting," "fascinating,"
and "entertaining" they are. I have done by best to promote
awareness of stereoscopes, and to promote interest in 3d images.

Interesting information, if "the current" range of standard B&W slide films
dont use dyes am I right to think they once did, I thought they had gone
over to using dye for even for for B&W slide film, because it diffused from
the site of the grains a little and "joined the dots" to produce a less
grainy image. They seem to have returned to an older process. What method
did Dia-Direct use ?
It was Phil Palmer who originaly inquired about converting old glass stereo
negatives to transparencies for projection so a negative image preferably in
a dye rather than a transparency seems to be what is required such as the
one's you mentioned below I remember hearing or reading about such films now
but I had forgotten about them.

I think the biggest obstacle to stereo photography has always been mounting
and viewing, not the taking. Digital stereo could solve these problems in a
number of ways. For one thing, there's no processing or mounting to worry
about. Also, there's a host of possible viewing apparatus, including LCD
goggles, "Virtual Boy" type left-right monitors, or even just a screen with
a lorgnette or View-Magic viewer.
I think all of the above would indeed help increase acceptence for digital
stereo photography.

I think the biggest obstacle currently is lack of consumer
awareness and interest. The fact that the term "3D" has been
hijacked by the computer graphics world doesn't help, although
perhaps we'll see cameras designed to create web ready "3D"
models that can be adapted for use as true stereo imaging
devices.
>Digital stereo could solve these problems in a number of
>ways.
The mind reels at the thought of what could be possible with a
dedicated digital stereo camera; while previewing in stereo you
could decide how far apart to place the lenses, perhaps there
could be "auto-depth" settings as well as auto exposure. Add a
few more lenses and you could print lenticulars on the spot.
Now all we need is a major manufacturer to sink some money
into the idea. Jim Harp

mount them in Franka mounts and then use a bandsaw to cut them to size.

You s

When I made that statement, I withheld some information.
I have played with digital camera's (mostly other people's), but I
haven't linked any yet. What I've seen hasn't impressed me enough to
spend the money to buy a couple of digital cameras (I estimated I'd be
looking at $1200 - if I could convince my wife of that, it would be a
small jump to convince her of an RBT).
And really now, try to convince me that carrying a pair of linked
digital camera's are going to weigh less than a Realist. They're
certainly going to be bulkier (time for a BIG camera bag).
Also I have no interest in anaglyph or prints. I have a viewer, it is a
convenient means of displaying stereo, and fairly compact. If I had a
digital equivalent that didn't require carrying around a laptop
computer, I'd be interested.
Finally, as Mark Dottle pointed out, my Realist looks cool. I imagine if
I walked around with a linked digital pair, I would get stares but
little interest. Much to my wife's concern, my Realist has turned into a
real chick* magnet.
.r.
* my apologies to those who find the term "chick" offensive. I mean it
with the greatest respect.

No, I don't. Kodak is not a major (film) camera manufacturer today.
They make a lot of disposable, and some reusable cameras, but they're
not a company you think of when buying a camera. Today's major camera
manufacturers are the various Japanese (Nikon, Canon, etc.) and
European (Leica, Hasselblad, etc.) companies. Kodak got out of the
camera business a long time ago. There is a segment of camera
manufacturing that American companies have a large share of, but I
don't think you're talking about large format cameras.

I still think display is going to be a problem with digital (stereo or
mono). If anything there are too many display options for digital
stereo and no standardization that would allow you to remain portable
across platforms.
By the way, there are no line breaks in your message. I've

An ad in this month's PSA shows a Hasselblad XPlan camera that takes
24 x 65mm images on the film! How about the stereo and/or card
making opportunities with this camera. It doen't do the typical
panoramic effect but creates a double size negative/slide. If anyone
gets creative, give me a discount on the lens (for the idea).

[stereo with Hasselblad XPan]
Gene, some people are doing stereo with this camera.
I've been contacted by several XPan shooters with
questions about our stereo panoramic mount (designed
for use in a medium format stereo viewer).
The 24x65 format of the XPan is a little too wide for
comfortable side-by-side viewing; most people would
have to diverge if there is some space between the left
and right images. So you should plan to do some cropping
(which you would also have to do to set a stereo window).
You could use the back side of our panoramic mount for
side-by-side slide pairs of about 23x54.25.

Viewing XPan stereo prints with the View Magic PV8x24
http://rmm3d.com/viewers/vm.8x24.html (not the basic
PV4000) would be an interesting experiment. Anyone
here try that yet?

Do you happen to know how they're doing it? A specially made beam-splitter
attached to the front of the lens? The XPan has a panoramic
viewfinder...wouldn't it also require masking of the viewfinder to know what
you're actually taking a picture of?
Wouldn't it be nice if Nikon, Canon, Minolta, etc., came out with an actual
stereo camera? When you look at the limited market they have for some of
their already in production models (how many Hasselblad XPans are sold in a
year? or how many Canon EOS-D30s will be sold before they're
obsolete?)...you've got to wonder if they wouldn't be able to sell just as
many stereo cameras!

Jay
