While in London on business I had the opportunity to attend part of the
London Stereoscopic Society's meeting today. I've been reading with great
interest about Bob Aldridge's project of scanning, digitally retouching and
then using a film recorder to reproduce Pat Whitehouse's classic slides.
It was great to see these slides projected. They were pin sharp and didn't
look the least bit like "dupes". It seems to me that output to a slide
recorder and then conventional projection is still the most effective way to
present digital stereo images to a large group. I also had a chance to look
at a View-Master reel Bob created by recording these scans using the View
Master Photoshop template available in the P3D files and then cutting with a
Personal cutter. The images on the reel compare favorably with any
commercial VM reel I've seen recently. First generation images from a VM
Personal camera might be more detailed, but this was a remarkable
demonstration of what the future could hold for VM personal reels. The
member's competition slide show featured lots of outstanding full frame as
well as 5 and 7P images from England, China and Spain. There were numerous
fine prints on display, including a number in Over/Under format. The
quality of the projection was first rate. And - small world - I ran into
Bill Moll there. The members of the Society couldn't have been more
gracious and welcoming. The existence of stereo clubs of this caliber
benefits 3D enthusiasts everywhere. Jim Harp
