[photo-3d] NSA Scheduling Long post...

Hello 3Dr's
Well I have enjoyed all your posts today on the Convention Schedule. First of
all I want to mention to most if not all of you, in these posts. If you don't
hurry up and register. You won't have anything to bitch about except that you
are staying at the Motel 6, 5 miles away and you have to take a cab in each
day very early to avoid the Construction delays and rush hour traffic. And
why do you have to pay that extra $10.00 just to register "after the
deadline."

There has been much venting here about the NSA. Please remember that the NSA
Convention is only called the NSA convention. Actually it could be called the
Buffalo Committee Convention, Or the Riverside Committee Convention, Or the
Greenbay Committee Convention. I think you get the idea here. The NSA seeks
out a group of "Idiots" Sorry Volunteers that are willing to take on the task
of hosting the yearly convention. Free that means without pay. They (NSA) do
much of the negotiating with the venue for the convention, then hand the ball
off to the Local idiots sorry volunteers. To put together the event. So If
you are not happy with something. They are always looking for a new batch of
idiots sorry. And you can host your very own NSA convention. What a deal.
:-)))

My personal feeling here is that if you get the chance to do "ALL" the things
at this convention then, we did not plan enough stuff for you to do. A great
Philosopher said always keep them wanting more. So that is what we are hoping
to do for you in Buffalo. We know and have heard and participated in these
before and know the problem areas but remember we cannot control the clock
and there are just so many hours in a day. There WILL be overlaps and
probably will always be until we have unlimited time to devote to free time
activities. I have done some cutting and pasting here and I apologize if I
got things confused. After this post if you are looking for me at the
Convention I will be the one hiding under the Table.

why can't the trade show always begin from around 2:00pm to 6:00 each day,
while the stereo theater runs from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm each day? This way
there would be no clashes. while i sympathize somewhat with the desire of
vendors to stuff their pockets, AND get to see the slide presentations, those
who came purely to enjoy this event must come first!
marshall

So you are saying that the Stereo Theater will be limited to 5 to 6 hours
each day. remember there is lunch in there. (After all the Projectionist
Union will not allow their members to work without a break.) And the Trade
Fair would be open for only 4 hours each day. Well, with a total there of
about 18 hours of Stereo Theater over 3 days, there will be LOTS more
disappointed folks who will not see their program shown at all. And with a
total of 8 hours of Trade Fair Time. Well, that would certainly solve a
problem there since I do not think "ANY" vendor will pay the prices for the
Tables (did any of you see those prices) and travel and Hotel and Meals and
Time. Just to stuff their pockets with that BIG MONEY. Much easier to stay
home and watch all of us fight over the stuff on EBAY. Cheeper too. Hummm I
wonder...

Lee, good points and I agree....Thursday night is optimum. As I recall,
the NSA board meeting is the only meeting Thursday eve and I don't imagine
that is going to detract from a get together. Since Thursday nights are
often uneventful (other than great to see you all and dining out!),
Jon G

Yes, Thursday is a good time for some of the meetings. And I think Lee will
be working on some of that. But the attendance spike comes Friday not
Thursday. There will be many who can't make it there and will miss everything
set for Thursday entirely. But I do not think any workshops should be held
till at the earliest Friday. Otherwise we will hear Why did you have that on
Thursday?

What would be wrong with mid to late Thursday afternoon?
You are limiting your attendance.....

Maybe we need to take a poll.
Who is this "WE"? I have not seen you following me around the last 2 years
since it was decided that the Convention be held in Buffalo. ;-)

Scheduling is a problem. Given what Gary says...maybe there ought to be a
dinner or meet one day early (since most everyone shows up early), on
Thursday day or Eve. Or how about Friday eve.?
Jon G

Great have a dinner. Who is going to make the arrangements, book a hall, pick
a menu, collect the money, send out notices, take reservations, figure out
who ordered what. "Not me." And again so far the attendance spike goes up
Friday.

Marshal Writes:
my objections arise when the nsa appears to cater to them OVER the needs of
the
members when it comes to scheduling of events at the convention.

And George Writes:
After being a vendor for a number of years, I can assure you that this is not
a fun job.
Vendors offer a service. Let's not downplay their contributions.

Are you implying that NSA is scheduling events around the desires of vendors?
I don't think this is or has ever been the case.
George
************
The NSA does not do any of the scheduling. The local Committee does this.
Hopefully with the help of all of you, Registering early so we know how many
to plan for. And sending in Your Workshop proposals early so the Chairman of
the Workshops can make some intelligent decisions as to when to schedule
things. And sending in your Stereo Theater show proposal forms so the
Chairman of the Theater can work out a schedule ahead of time. So we can
print it in the program book, so you who are "registered" can look up when a
show is supposed to be and arrange your time so you go to the theater to see
it. Many times the schedule goes right out the proverbial "Stereo Window."
When someone shows up Thursday or Friday and says, "Well I forgot to send in
the form can I still get my slides shown." And there goes all the work
putting together a "schedule." Or do we just tell them Sorry you will have to
wait till NEXT YEAR.

one of the most annoying aspects is the annual cramming of many slide
presentations into the first day, starting in the early morning, often
before people have had a chance to check into the hotel. i firmly believe
that this cramming is done to accomodate vendors, some of whom would prefer
to draw people to their tables, than have them viewing slide presentations,
and not spending $$$.

Well, this one does not make any sense at all since the Trade Fair does not
start till Sat. And the only cramming done in the theater is the Theater
Committee trying to accommodate "EVERYONE." And maybe a slide or two into the
projector.;-)
********************
Actually the original concerns had nothing to do with conflicts between the
dealers room and the slide presentations, but between "Workshops and
meetings" and the slide presentations.
Bruce
AHHHHHHHH Thank You Bruce.....
***********************
Nor should meetings/presentations be in conflict with each other (I wish)
nor should they be in conflict with the stereo theater. Ideally, it should
be week-long convention with everything done serially. Otherwise, I see
no way around having competitions of things going on. Personally I'd
find the vendors to be the least of the problem.

AHHHHHHH another one who gets it. Remember this is a 3 Day Convention for the
most part. The events on Thursday revolve around setting up and a few
meetings. The real stuff Starts Friday.

What would happen if the convention were made a day longer, and things
less parallel'ed? Can it happen, or is the format etched in stone?
Just curious! :-)
Mike K.

Well, a good question. My first answer would be. "Volunteer to run an NSA
convention, and add as many days as you want." :-)

Now for the serious answer. No, the format is not etched in stone. At least I
did not see the stone. But there are lots of things that fall into play and
the first thing is the location. Can you make a deal with some place that
will add another day on without charging you an arm and a leg. It is not
cheep renting almost an entire Hotel. How many people will be able to add the
extra day to the vacation. As it is and I have mentioned the attendance spike
comes Friday. I think these are the people who might be able to slip away for
one day and fly in to the convention. But how many are there that can do 2
days. I don't think too many. Unless you have the whole week off to go to the
convention. Maybe you would rather spend the Week with the family (maybe not)
and just try slipping away for the 3 day'er to attend the convention. So how
many people will join the bunch that would have a problem with the convention
going to a 4 day format. Then there are the Monday tours. Well, that is a
whole new week and there goes even more problems.....

So here we are waiting for you all to arrive here in Buffalo for the NSA 2001
"Shuffle off to Buffalo" Convention. Most of the snow is gone, and they
removed the Ice Boom from Lake Erie this week so in a few days the 100 plus
square miles of ice that it was holding back will move on down river. By July
things will be looking good and we hope you have a Great Convention and go
home "WANTING MORE"

Thanks for your time.
