What? No one wants to fire the first shot?
Okay then. I happen to think that the introduction of
Velvia was the global catastrophe. One need only to
open any currently published picture book to find
those telltale Velvia color distortions. For every
picture that Velvia enhances there seems to be one
that is unnecessarily garish. It is disheartening to
see so many potentially great photographs undermined
by the photographer’s choice of film. On those
occasions I am presented with a clear blue sky,
glowing morning or afternoon light, or tantalizing but
subtle colorations, I’m glad I loaded with Kodachrome
25. Then there is sun-dappled shade, for which both
Velvia or Kodachrome tend to be too contrasty. Here
again I have found Kodachrome 25 will often work out
beautifully if I use a graduated neutral density
filter at a suitable orientation. Finally, there is
mixed artificial lighting. Velvia, forget it. But
Kodachrome 25 through an FLD filter is often just the
ticket.
Obviously, there is no universal film good for all
situations. While the neutrality of Kodachrome yields
dull slides in ordinary situations, when I come upon
something truly beautiful, I believe Kodachrome 25
gives me the best chance of capturing it. I am
distressed that it is being discontinued.
