Marco Pauck recently announced here that he may not
be able to continue archiving this and other lists at
http://www.pauck.de/archive/mailinglist/mailinglist.html
So far I've only seen public comment on this from one
person (thanks, John!). The multi-indexed, searchable,
and browsable archives are an incredibly valuable service
that Marco has been providing to the 3D community, at no
cost to any of us, for about two years. I am enormously
grateful to have had access to this searchable free public
archive, so let me proclaim "Bravo! Thanks for the superb
job, Marco!"
Now where should we turn? Private purchase of sufficient
bandwidth and web server "muscle" to replace what Marco has
been providing would probably cost more than $100 per month.
With the calcite archives frequently unavailable, out of date,
and generally more difficult to "mine" effectively, it will
be a tremendous loss when the Pauck archive site goes down
shortly. Marco's figures show 4GB of monthly data transfer.
Even though I use the archives a lot, I know I don't use them
*that* much, so there have to be others among us who are also
putting the archives to good use.
Marco mentioned a few options, including letting the service
drop, which neither he nor I want to see happen. With the
lack of response so far, it's hard to say how much time, effort,
and expense we should devote to the archive relocation project.
Please take a moment to let us know what you think. Use the
special email address archives at rmm3d dot com (archives @
rmm3d . com, with the spaces removed), which will forward
your message to me and to Marco.
(Before anyone brings up the yahoo archives, there are several
reasons we consider those inadequate for our needs.)
Time is running out to act.
Thanks,
Paul Talbot
