I guess it crosses everybodies mind regarding finding off the self
digital cameras that have ready to electronically mate plugs. What
I've often wondered is, since almost all digital cameras have a
serial and/or USB port, how difficult would it be to make maybe
some kind of microcontroller to trigger both of them
simulataneously. Or maybe connecting them to a lap top and have it
do the dirty work. Is this doable?

I actually did buy a pair of those $39 digitals (it came with
Picture It, 99), awhile back but never actually tried them for
3-D. That's because the quality (no surprise of course) was
rather poor on the one I tried so I didn't bother persuing it.
Yeah, now maybe those $89.00 might be more interesting!
