[sell-3d] A cautionary tale and a conundrum

The cautionary tale:
I recently sold a fairly new (paper work indicates it was made last year)
Fed-Boy.
Upon it's arrival the purchaser contacted me to inform me that it arrived
damaged.
The problems were a pronounced rattle, an apparent peculiarity of the
Iris, erratic behavior in AUTO mode and a very small ding or scratch.
I was distressed to hear of this a and I tore up the buyer's check and
reported the damage to UPS, who picked it up and returned it to me very
quickly.
Upon inspection I discovered that the rattle was the pressure plates on
the rear cover which are designed to move about and thus, when there is
no film on the camera, the rattle.
The irises or diaphragms of the Fed do look odd, but that is the way they
look. The AUTO mode problems were solved with a new battery. I knew
the battery was weak and I put a brand new one in the pouch on the
camera's case, unfortunately I neglected to tell the buyer it was there.
My fault. As to the ding, it was there, I honestly don't know if UPS
inflicted it, or if it was there when I shipped it. I ran a roll of film
through it and it worked fine.
The Moral: When dealing with unusual cameras, explain their functions
and their oddities carefully. Because I failed to I disappointed a buyer
and lost a sale.

The conundrum:
With the above in mind I have to report that UPS responded that the
damage to the camera was entirely caused by poor packaging so they
weren't responsible. The packaging looked a little skimpy to me, but the
folks in shipping (who rarely have anything come back) assured me it was
adequate to the task . Indeed, it must have been because the camera went
out and came back in the same condition, packaged in the same packaging .
so the poor packaging which caused the damage was absolutely not the
cause of the damage because there was no damage.
At least the shipping back to me was free.
