Here's the formula for "a" from Kingslake, in case you want to put
it in your programmable too.
 
 
    2 * af * an   This gives the correct focusing distance to make
a = -----------   objects at af and an equally sharp (or equally
      af + an     fuzzy, depending on your personal philosophy).
