The lenses basically act like diffraction gratings (I don't think they
are actually diffraction gratings but someone on this list should know
what they actually are). The red end of the spectrum is shifted in
one direction and the violet end of the spectrum is shifted in the opposite
direction. The orientation of the two gratings is reversed for each eye.
For example the left lens shifts red to the right and the right lens shifts
red to the left. (similarly the left lens shifts violet to the left and
the right lens shifts violet to the right). The combination of the different
shifts makes red appear close and violet appear far away. Intermediate colours
will appear at intermediate distances depending upon their wavelength.
Presumably the effect will work best if the different images in the scene
are based on pure colours.
