FWIW, there was an article in Astronomy or Sky and Telescope within the
last few years on how to modify a cheap flash unit to provide a
controlled preflash.  I thought I had a copy, but a quick search didn't
find it.  If I do find it, I'll post here.  In the meantime, try a
public library for an article search using the keyword "preflash".

BTW, CCD cameras sometimes benefit from a controlled preflash, but in
most cases they will be colded scientific grade cameras using short
exposures for subjects which have very low light levels in some areas.
