Vision Mapping

Does anyone know of research into mapping the relative vision zones? What I
mean is that some central area of vision is used for the greatest detail. As
you get farther from that center, the level of perceptible detail decreases.
Has this been mapped or measured, perhaps in degrees? How much is it
considered to vary throughout the population?
