I think out-of-focus 3D is more relevant here than on P3D because 
out-of-focus 3D tells us something about how the brain must process 
3D.  Jim Crowell can tell us more but Westheimer at UCB and ...  and
...  starts with an S... won't come to me ... are pretty big in 
experimenting with stereopsis and out of focus images and quantifying 
the results of their experiments.

Bill's SL3D pix on his web site demonstrate how well out of focus and 
3D can get along.  When Bill showed me these pix years ago, I was 
especially impressed with what I think was the one labeled "Brain smear"
on his site.  (I seem to recall the tint being a little different.)
Anyhow, I think that objects that are too near or too far being out of 
focus is natural and works well in some cases and this is one of them.
