Peter's note reminds me to make a distinction.  When I speak of 
combining MTFs, I'm talking about something like combining the MTF 
of the film with the MTF of the lens.  I'm not talking about 
combining the MTFs of two lenses used in series.  I can see where 
that would get very complicated.

I have a Merriam Webster Collegiate and an OED and they agree with 
your findings.  However, these are older dictionaries (around 
1970) and I believe that this meaning is a more recent addition so 
I will look for a newer dictionary.  I believe that etymologically, 
this use came from a misuse, but that doesn't matter because that's 
one way words acquire new meanings.  (Do I ever give up easily?  Well, 
sure, just ask my wife if I argue long with _her_! 8-)
