BobH asks, "Why not use eyepiece projection?"  Beats me; it's a 
good way.  Maybe there were some other parameters like inability 
to remove the lens(es), as you say.  You can even use objective 
projection (remove eyepiece) sometimes though the field might be 
too small, in the case of a microscope, to cover the format.
