I don't know whether this is a representative example, but several years
ago I bought a "good" standard hobbyist microscope from Edmund Scientific,
and an FD adapter for a Canon A-1 camera. I hooked everything up according
to the instructions, and the result looked terrible! I put together some
plumbing fixtures to make an adapter so I could use eyepiece and camera lens
at the same time, and the images were vastly improved.

I wouldn't say that generations of microscope photographers
(photomicrographers?) are wrong, but I would say that perhaps the results
depend on the particular microscope and camera used, so it might be
worthwhile to try both ways.
