"STEREO PHOTOGRAPHY:
PLACES AND TIMES REMEMBERED"

In this 40 minute video, the history of three-dimensional photography
(1850-1940) is told through the reminiscences of Philip Brigandi, one of the
top stereo photographers for the Keystone View Company. At the end of the era
of stereo photography, Brigandi is assigned the task of throwing out half of
the prints in Keystone's files...the remaining images will be stored away in
concrete vaults. Brigandi laments: "I thought I was hired to take pictures,
not destroy them. But then again, stereo photography's not what it used to
be..."

The images which Philip Brigandi selected for storage were to form the core of
the Keystone-Mast collection of the California Museum of Photography. Over
150 images from this collection are used in the video to illustrate the story
of stereo photography.

The three dimensional images of stereo photography covered: The development
of the transcontinental railway, the birth of aviation, the career of
President Theodore Roosevelt, tours of the far off lands of Egypt and India,
even the San Francisco earthquake. Stereo photography was the newsreel of its
day. "STEREO PHOTOGRAPHY: PLACES AND TIMES REMEMBERED" presents the
tremendous range of The Keystone-Mast Collection to an extent which could not
be accomplished in an introductory exhibition, or a short visit to the
Museum's study collection.

Though the stereo process is fully explained, the 3-D effect is not simulated
in the video. Above all, the video is not intended to replace the experience
of looking at the original photographs. The purpose of the video is to
enhance the understanding and appreciation of the photographs, as they are
placed in historical and sociological context.

The rich sound track of the video incorporates Brigandi's reminiscences,
quotations from contemporary sources, and period music by Scott Joplin.
"STEREO PHOTOGRAPHY: PLACES AND TIMES REMEMBERED" is a time machine which
will transport the viewer to the heyday of stereo photography, and provide an
effective understanding of the historical context for the photographic work.
