Wow!  The same thread running on more than one list.  As if I 
weren't confused enough.  I hope I'm not repeating myself on 
the same list.  8-)  The problem is that many lenses have the 
pupils buried in the glass.  Asymmetrical (retrofocus) lenses 
such as for an SLR are usually really bad this way.  You want 
the entrance pupil up near your eye.  I have a nice 50 mm off 
a Nikon rangefinder which is perfect for a viewing lens.  Wish 
I could find another just like it.
