Peter Abrahams should comment, but the problem with the pupils
being buried in the glass is that unless they are enormous, 
you won't get much field of view.  With a 'scope, the pupil is 
located toward the eye from the eyepiece (viewing lens) so as to
give as much field of view as possible with a pupil of relatively 
small diameter.
