No surprise here.  24 bit colour is merely a "good enough for most"
spec.  For medical purposes and related activity you need 11 bit
accuracy/ 12 bit resolution, sugesting initially 14+ bit resolution. 
While a trained eye can discern about 700 levels of intensitity, the
levels are not linearly related hence the requirement of 4096 linearly
spaced levels to ensure that the detectable levels remain detectable. 
Obviously 8 bit levels just don't approach the discrimination of the
human eye.  Film really doesn't either in most cases, but the
photographer composes the scene so that the essential detail is retained
in the developed photo.  Of course, there are also scientific and
technical films and cameras.

The best hardcopy device is the digital representation of the image so
long as you have a computer and monitor to view it.  After that you are
into image setting etc.

But today's printers are a real good deal for the money as are the
inexpensive computer monitors.
