I had the impression that grain and resolution were considered not to be
the same thing. Lest we get caught up in another struggle over semantics
(as usual), perhaps we should start with a clear definition of grain and
resolution. Also - by grain do you mean "number of [whatevers] per unit area
or per linear distance on the imaging surface / display", or do you mean
number of [whatevers] across the *entire width* (or over the entire area)
of the image"?
With reference to printer issues, I attended an interesting lecture two weeks
ago on new approaches to halftoning techniques. Halftoning involves
manipulation of the image data to make it work better with the
characteristics of printers. It turns out that the method used can make a
large difference in the overall appearance and visibility of artifacts of
the print. Some new methods are being explored, and appear to offer
considerable promise.
