A typical "large = E size+" inkjet or electrostatic plotter has a width
of 60 inches and 300 dpi resolution. But such devices only have
resolutions on the order of 80-100 lpm and are on the order of 5 bit
level effective.

They cost something like $0.60 to $2.00 per square foot to operate.

Much more common are 36 inch wide machines starting under $10,000. Some
of this class may exceed the 300 dpi spec., I haven't looked for a
while.

We have to be kind of careful here to distinguish between doable at any
cost versus doable on a desktop of Joe Average are easily done through a
service bureau at reasonable cost. Image setters capable of 4000 dpi
are commercially available and that will rival the resolution of 35 mm
film at some cost factor.
