I may have mentioned this before on this list but Joel has devised
a very clever Ocular Ray Tracer (called ORT, it's only a little
thing 8-) and it is live on his web site at

At least it was last time I checked.  I know he's adding more
glasses and the capability to handle more surfaces to it.

There are instructions and pictures associated with it but basically
it just traces rays backwards from the eye through the ocular you are
examining and tells you how big of a spot is made.  It also looks at
the field curvature and the coverage.

So if you want to see how a Hastings triplet does, hie yourself unto 
this site and check it out.
