I think the best thing to do is to test the RBT zoom lenses.  The 
heck with opinion or lens generalizations which may or may not 
apply in this particular case.  ;-)  One of the list members has
offered me the loan of his RBT with zooms for testing purposes.
I'll test it in my standard way which is with the Edmund lens
testing chart and Kodachrome 25, camera on a heavy studio tripod.  
Then I can compare the results to my other tests done the same way.  
This won't give any absolute results but it will give relative 
results.  In addition, I'll be able to check for distortion in the 
middle and the two ends of the zoom range.
