The macro cameras which I have seen, fall into two categories.
The ones that the fellow in the French Stereo Club made used a single lens, a
slide plate with the apertures setting the lens separation and a beam-splitter
type of mirror setup to feed the images into a twin camera rig (actually two
nicely twinned Olympias). The slide plate had a large rectangular opening to
be used when framing and focusing. The slide was then slid over to the
apertures for picture taking. Within limits, different lens separations could
be achieved by different slides with different hole spacings.
Dave Burder uses a different philosophy. He will make a macro camera for a
specific shot. The camera is simpler, due to the special nature. It is
basically a two aperture, single lens, single camera version. To avoid the
need to focus and frame, he places two bent wires on either side of the camera
with a gap in the middle at the right position for correct focus. Get the
insect, etc. in the gap and click - a photo with perfect focus without even
looking! I don't know how the plenum to separate the images worked. Sort of
like a magician, he showed me enough to get my interest, but not enough for me
to easily duplicate it.
