That's interesting that the Hastings worked better than the Realist
high-magnification viewer.  The Hastings isn't generally all that good 
for wide field.  So the Realist must really be terrible.  Of course no 
ocular is really wide when it's that short.  If you like to fool 
around with lens design, I'd sure encourage downloading OSLO LT from 
http://www.sinopt.com/  You can then plug in the values for a Hastings 
from Edmund's catalog and see what you think.

PS: Anyone remember what magazine the illustration of the Realist
viewer was shown?
