In the museum in Chamonix France there is a large contraption which was
used in the mapping of the Mont-Blanc Massif. To produce a contour map and
from that also a model. The device includes a stereoscope used to examine
aerial stereo pairs with a "Floating spot " device two points which could
be adjusted to give the same apparent depth that the feature they are
positioned over has. This seemed to be coupled to a large drawing board
which made up the rest of this device I think the adjustment of the spot
set the contour distance and its movement over the image drew the contours.
