T3D Photogrammetry in action

In the September issue of Sci Am (just out) there is an 
article on the fossil footprints at Laetoli that the late 
Mrs. Leakey's team discovered some time back.  There is a 
contour diagram of a footprint done using two shots from a 
camera.  Nothing further about method is said in the article.  
Anyone know if this was done by hand (eye?) or if there was a 
computer program involved to automate the procedure to some 
degree?  I'm just curious - no current application.
