Not sure whether it was a viewer or a camera which was being 
talked about but in cameras, at least, I have seen considerable 
variation in resolution from camera to camera, even the same model 
of a camera.  Even more amazing (to me) is that I have seen three
times enormous variation between the sharpness of one lens and the 
other on the _same_ camera.  So in my opinion, one must look at a 
large sample of a model and even then one can only speak in 
probabilistic terms.

As to comparing 35 mm and medium format, for the most part they have 
different advantages.  The 35 mm is easy to make light and handy and 
the medium format is easy to get high res from.
