Excellent idea!  It's actually more true than you might think 
until you study that perspective paper.  I guess one caveat
would be that you want people to measure from where the iris 
appears to be, not where the physical thing called an iris 
actually lies.  The iris as seen through the front of the lens
is called the entrance pupil.  It actually has a position
which you can determine using an SLR as a rangefinder.
