Here's a problem I'd like your input in solving..
I believe "card boarding" is a dual lens artifact; it results from the brain
only recognizing self-similarities between edge boundaries, typical to a
dual lens stereo pair. These self-similarities are only obvious to the brain
because background shifts are apparent. In other words, I don't think a
smooth, non-textured object will display volume in a dual lens system unless
other stereo clues, such as shading or movement, are present.
One way of testing this thesis might be to suspend dull, un-textured spheres
(such as last years "Father Christmas"'s balls) in an evenly illuminated set
(having a back ground that contrasts the spheres), and examining the results?
Do you know of any arguments to theis concept?
