I disagree with your thesis but I commend your suggested experiment.

I think whether dual or single lens stereo, a featureless sphere with perfectly
uniform lighting will shown no depth.
The experiment as I envision it would be pretty simple. Shoot the featureless
sphere with the single lens stereo camera and then shoot is again with an SLR
on a slide bar to mimic the dual lens camera. For the separation, use the separation of the centroids in the single lens camera. For aperture, use the
half the aperture of the single since in the single, half the aperture goes to
each image. And of course match focal lengths.
