That's certainly the way I see it.  In addition, I think the cause is 
insufficent resolution.  There can be a lot of parallactic disparity
between a tree which is fairly distant and a mountain which is for all
stereo intents and purposes at infinity.  However, the tree may be far
enough away that there is not enough disparity in images of it to show
that it is rounded.  I have seen this with my eyes in real life, not just 
in stereo pairs.  All you have to do is find a situation as described
above and hold your head very still so that you can't use any motion 
parallax as a clue.
