First of all, it's nice to see you posting to one of
the 3D groups, especially with the results your nice experiment
(which was even nicer due to having cats being the subject of the
image)!
The only comments that I recall on this subject were
related to the 35mm stereo graphic camera which has one
lens fix-focused at 12 feet and the other at 39 feet (as I recall
from the alignment instructions). They were trying to cover
"everything" without having any user-focus adjustment.
I suspect that you're doing the same thing that they
were trying to take advantage of. Perhaps their pick of
distances (I can check if one gets serious) can be generalized
into "rules" -- assuming their picks are "optimized" ones.
