There are quite a few of them. It's used for calibration of one's system
including monitor, scanner, and printer so that things match (given there
still
are problems with the different "ranges" of color that each device can
handle
and the different models they use (CMYK for some printers, for instance vs
RGB
for a monitor)).
I calibrated my monitor the "cheap" way using the facilities in a utility
provided by Adobe with Photoshop 5. There are some other programs
available (search the web for color calibration) as well as really intense
versions that use a hardware measuring device up onto the screen for
those who want it *CALIBRATED*. :-)
I also made a custom "curves" for my scanner to "correct" it (beyond
adjusting it's gamma settings). I haven't calibrated my printer (or
installed
the mfgr's supplied ICC color correction files) yet because it's default
printer driver's colors seem to work quite well for me.
