I just stand in front of a mirror, look at my left eye with my left
eye and align one mark on the ruler to the center of that eye.  Then
without moving the ruler, I look at my right eye with my right eye 
and note the marking in the center of that pupil.  Subtract one number
from the other and Bob's your uncle.
