*****  I think that your method is inherently very accurate. The reflective
surface of the mirror guarantees a perfectly perpendicular viewing angle at
each end of your measurement. That's far more precise than any ordinary use
of a ruler without a mirror! Selecting a mark at the center of the pupil
should be pretty easy and accurate too. From my own work in QC operations, I
would expect at least +/- .5mm if not better. You can improve the accuracy
by consistent use of a magnifying glass of some sort.
