Or perhaps a good bit less, depending how big of a memory card
or cards one wants. Even only a 64MB one holds about 130 of
"normal" compression images.

This part would be trivial. I bought a single Nikon 950 for
my wife (although I probably use it more than she does, including
some stereo work). Put them on a bar, with lens-end toward each
other, and flip one 90-degrees one way and twist the other one
the other way (if you know what it looks like, you'll know what
I mean by this) and the two lenses could be very close together
(or any further apart than that).

Sync would be a problem however.

The 950 will do that (TIFF), but the jpg that Nikon uses is very
well done such that I don't even use the least-compression and
use the "second" (more-compression) level normally because it's
pretty much indistinguishable from even non-compressed. It's
quite impressive. However, I "can't wait" for jpeg2000 to become
popular which it should within the next couple years.
