Part of the problem, I'm convinced, is the want of antihalation
backing in HIE. Where other objects--like, say, a tree stem--pass
among foliage they get much lighter because of the "glare" from the
foliage. That glare also reduces shadow contrast in the foliage area.
I've been able to outwit this tendency somewhat in making foliage
studies only by revving up the contrast (plus edge sharpness and so
on) in Photoshop.
Bobbi Doyle at one point I believe (forgive me if it was someone
else!) made the interesting comment that Konica had excellent foliage
detail in comparison to HIE. Konica does have an antihalation
backing, no?
