The Canon A-1 should have no problems at all with IR film. The problem is
that some of the newer autofocus EOS cameras use an IR beam to focus, and
it can fog the film. Check the IR FAQ at Willem's homepage for info on
which EOS to worry about.

AS far as camera filters, I would definitely buy a wratten #25 red. Some
recent testing suggests you may not need it under tungsten artificial
light, but you will certainly need the filter outdoors. You can usually
find these used in good condition at a photo store.
