Just to correct this pretty informative post, the newer EOS cameras use 
an IR film-advance mechanism, rather than a mechanical one which counts 
perforations.  This fogs the area adjacent to the perforations on one 
side of the film.

Older EOS cameras do not do this; no manual-focus cameras do this to my 
knowledge; no Nikons do this; I don't think Minoltas do this either.
