Primarily because I don't trust the 70mm cassettes.  While we opted for the 
metal versions over the plastic, these things still don't inspire 
confidence (they're of the "snap-on" variety).  So, until we've run a few 
trials to see exactly how IR light-tight these things are, I decided to be 
better safe than sorry and load the whole shebang in the dark.

BTW, while somewhat pricey, The Alden 70mm film loader is worth it.  A well 
designed, easy to operate piece of equipment.
