loading HIE in the "dark"

During a trip to Italy a few years ago, I loaded a roll of 35mm HIE in a
windowless bathroom, worrying only about sunlight ruining frames of
film. There was a wall-mounted electric water heater up on the wall
overhead, which had a little red indicator light glowing brightly enough to
knock out the first 2-3 frames of the roll.
Aside from little red lights, I've learned to let my eyes adjust to the dark
when I'm trying a new untested room. Usually, after a few minutes, I find
the door isn't light tight. Usually, I've found that all it takes is to get several
feet away from that door, and face the opposite direction towards a dark
wall. It never hurts to stuff a towel in front of the bottom of the door, as
that's where the majority of the leak occurs.

Another warning about 70mm IR b&w film. Load the film into the
cassettes in
the dark and load and unload the cassettes into your camera or the
camera
film holder in the dark as well. Otherwise, you will fog the entire roll.
Again, I speak from personal experience. GSD
