Subject: faint lines on negatives

Hi, all

Let me for your convenience summarize all your valuable remarks about
the mistery of the faint light horizontal line on IR negatives. Its one
line over the whole length of the film.

Some of you blame the shutter of my Nikon F801 camera (similar to 8008?)
(Roger Hein) As the line is light, it is not possible that there is any
leakage. This should show up as black on the negative. A leakage from
the film ID window is therefore also excluded. (Seth Mayer)

I also exclude the possibility of aperture spots and optical failures.(
Peter Ray) The line runs over the whole film about 20% from the top and
is very persistent. I used different lenses/focal lengths.

There is no such lines on other Non IR negatives. I checked all my
negatives carefully on this phenomena.(Peter Badcock). As far as IR is
concerned: this was my first IR HIE film experience!

Remains the remark of static electricity caused by quick electric
rewinding (Pete Damip) and the possibility of too excessive agitation
(Bob Long)

Roger, Seth, Peter1, Peter2, Pete and Bob thank you very much for your
stimulating reactions! I will proceed to my second HIE coming days. I
will use same camera again and wait what happens! On your advice I will
apply gentle agitation. I will also take XTOL 1+1 (not stock solution as
before) and of course adjust the development time. Moreover I will seal
off the film ID window, although I dont think this is the problemmaker.
If this second film shows the same lines, I will try my old Nikon
Nikkormat EL. She has no electric rewind, no ID window, an older type of
shutter (off course) vertical run. You see, Im a Nikon fan!!
Considering all your reactions Im beginning to believe, that static
electricity could be the cause. That explains the fact, that in your
experiences these lines do not appear all the times i.e. may be not
during higher humidity??

If anyone else has some other advice, please let me know.

I will keep you informed! I must say I learn a lot. Thanks heaven, that
WJ started this group! See you!
