I was on vacation in Hawaii (big island) and had to evacuate the hotel
because of a tsunami warning. We drove to the higher elevations, and I
decided to finish the roll of HIE in my camera. Our car was parked in the
shade, and I put my Minolta X700 under some jackets in the trunk and changed
the film that way (without climbing in, of course). Didn't notice any
problem whatsoever, with either the roll taken out or the new roll put in.
BTW, the tsunami was less than 1 foot tall :-)
On another occasion, we were visiting friends in Maine, USA, and their new
house didn't have a single closet! So I waited till evening, and put my
camera under the bed blankets in the loft and changed my HIE that way. Some
light was coming in the window and from other rooms in the house, but it
didn't affect the film.
I've also ducked into closets when visiting historic sites, including a
mansion in New Orleans, LA, USA. When I stay at a hotel, there's not a
problem since most hotel bathrooms in the USA are windowless.
A friend of mine took HIE and EIR on vacation in Jamaica, and was glad he
had a changing bag with him! On his return trip, their airport security
insisted on opening all his film canisters. So, one by one, he put them in
the changing bag and let the inspector check them out.
