Although I've recently switched to Xtol (just developed my first roll of
HIE with it last night), all my previous work with HIE (except for
experiments with Rodinal) was done with D76.  My "normal" method of
working was to meter through a #25 filter at EI 250 and develop with D76
(ID-11) 1+1 70F 10 min.  Certainly, I deviated from this depending upon
what effect I was after, as well as the time of year and other factors.
