Roland,
I have used a Wratten #87, which is very close to the 87C, with the loss
of just one f-stop. Typically, on bright sunny days, as suggested by Joe
Paduano's chart, I shoot HIE at 1/125 @ f/11, or 1/60 @ f/16 when using
a #25 red, so for the #87 I use 1/60 @ f/11 or 1/30 @ f/16, both are
including a polarizer on top of the gel. I have yet to experiment much with
the #87, especially in backlit situations, under tree cover, etc. My guess
is that the shadows would fall off even harder than with a #25 red filter,
making such situations difficult to capture.
When I first tried using a #87 filter, I thought I'd have to compensate by
2-3 f-stops. I got some incredibly dense, unprintable negatives, which
reminded me that just because I can't see thru that filter doesn't mean the
film can't!

I just got my Kodak 87C gel filter the other day after a 1 month backorder
from
Adorama. I'm going to mount it BTFR (between the film rails) on my
camera and
I was wondering if anyone who uses an 87C could give me some
exposure advice.
What is a good ISO to set my N90s to? What's a typical exposure for
noon on a
cloudless sunny day. I use HIE and like blow out highlights.
Thanks for your intial guidance in using this filter.
Peace Rolland Elliott
